When non-fungible tokens where first launched, many of us thought that this transition will put an end to traditional art. Basically, the brushes and canvas were replaced by screens and pens. Even the final products didn’t have a physical form. But this was not entirely true. As much as we appreciate digital illustrations and the work behind them, there are some who still enjoy feeling the texture of a painting on their fingertips. Although part of society wasn’t so thrilled about this change, artists around the world embraced this initiative. Therefore, they started creating new pieces of art, filling the Metaverse with masterpieces.
Even if some of them chose to only work digital versions, there are some renowed artists who couldn’t let go of what made them famous and started working both. And this is one example we’ll talk about today. Felix Aftene, accustomed to working his magic on canvas, started a new collection but this time, on crypto space. Don’t think for a second that he forgot about the essence of art! He took a painting, created its digital form and then binded them together. He called them art hybrids. Pretty accurate description, don’t you think? I know I do!
Who is Felix Aftene?
The visionist, the passionate and the master. First of all, Felix is an artist in the real meaning of the word. Secondly, he is considered a postmodern visual painter in a continuous search for self and inspiration. He managed to amaze a whole world with his special skills of portraying the greatest ideologies of humanity through a series of symbolic artworks. I must admit one thing, being able to talk about Felix Aftene is a great honor. And also, the biggest challange I had since the beginning of this article series. So, I’m pretty thrilled about this one!
His art takes many forms. From classic paintings to sculpture and digital illustrations. In 2008 he created an amazing bronze monument called “Time Capsule” to commemorate 600 years since first historical documentation of the city of Iasi. His great talent was internationally recognized, having his artworks displayed in art galleries around the world like U.S.A., Switzerland and Israel. I noticed one pretty interesting exhibition named “Cine este Doamne, omul?” which took place in Barlad, Romania. The main theme presented through a series of artworks was the very existance of mankind itself. But questioning our life as humans is strongly binded by the spirit of our conscious. Our rationality and roots, the religion and our believes are the main reason why this question is justified. Just think about it! How many times did you ask yourself what is the real meaning of life?
as part of the “Iconic Memory” collection
By Felix Aftene
The idea of the collection itself is an insight of the artist’s mind and a retrospective of his personal memory. The way elements combine in the painting completes the philosophical idea that the world arround us is a representation of ourselves. Each one of them can easily stand alone expressing a whole different vision. Together, they express an unique version of how humanity relates to its surroundings.
From my point of you, the animals looking like stuffed ones underline the cruelty we show towards other beings. The red nose of the man, a refrence to traditional clown look, petting the wild animals could represent the characteristic hypocrisy of a person caring for “dead” animals. But this is just a personal thought. We need to be aware of the today’s society problems.

A bronze powdered with blue pigment sculpture exquisitely made as a winged cat. According to Greek mythology, the chimera was a fire-breathing hybrid with a lion body. The resemblance with our cute little feline, as a descendant of the ferocious lion, comes from its very roots. Felix Aftene’s sculpture is a reflection of his own artistic way of expressing the perception over idealist concepts in life. As he describes it ‘a physical projection of the canvas images’. Pretty unique, isn’t it?
His imaginative visions take shape, meaning that imagination can be physically represented. The flying cat is not a common thing, but something we can easily picture in our minds. So, the sculpture is a shape of our thoughts. Think about the limitless possibilities we could have, if we would find the courage to express ourselves through art. And a cat is a pretty cute way to do it through. What form would you choose to shape it first?
“Dali’s mustache and Other Colors: Chapter Fourteen”
as part of the “Dali’s mustache and Other Colors” NFT Collection
By Felix Aftene
Where do I start? Dali is one of my favorites! Well, this project took birth three years ago, followed by a collaboration with Lucian Dan Teodorovici, a contemporary writer. As a combination between paintings and literature, every image had its own story meticulously written. Later on, when the NFT craze was just getting started, Felix decided that it was time to take a step further. So, he turned to technology and created sixteen non-fungible tokens after his paintings.
The main theme is a tribute to the great Salvador Dali and his imagination, the psychedelic way he managed to portray some elements being in fact the focus point.
Actually, the shrooms depicted in the image underline the idea of psychedelic thoughts, being a well-known fact that they cause hallucinations, or “inspiration” if I may. We notice the flying cats once again, but this time the wings are missing maybe suggesting one of the hallucinations mentioned before. The effect is somehow already visible, given the fact that their shape is an unnatural one.
As for the title, Dali’s mustache is one of the elements that really made him famous and easily recognizable. The NFT has many nude tones, except the blue and red – primary colors of the spectre. The artist chise to use them on key elements, enough to focus the attention on them. Together, they underline the idea presented at the beginning of this part – the psychedelic vision of Dali. The devil’s in the details.
There are so many more things to say about his artworks, but I sure know one word to describe them all: outstanding. Even if I show you just a small part, the complexity of it it’s incredible! Take a look at his work over the years and enjoy a little piece of heaven! And, of course, let me know what you think!
